Back 40 Flying Club

Learn about the Club

The Back Forty Flying club is a not-for-profit IRS 501(c)(7) organization based at the Fort Wayne International Airport. This brings us access to six runways, four precision instrument approaches, and all the safety margins you can expect from a large airport. At the same time, FWA is small enough to make talking with ATC an easy and friendly experience.

Scheduling and Availability

The Back Forty Flying club utilizes Schedule Master for online scheduling. We have a low member to aircraft ratio making for excellent availability. Just log on, make your schedule, and head for the airport. Telephone scheduling is also available for occasions when you do not have Internet access. We use Fort Wayne Aerocenter for our line and FBO services, and their extended hours make aircraft access extremely convenient, whether planned in advance or for a last minute flight.

Long cross country flights are within your reach. Our members have flown to New England, Florida, Canada, and Alaska, to name a few. We have very low one (1) hour daily minimums on overnight flights and fuel purchases while off base are fully reimbursed. See our Operations and Policy manual for full details.

Both planes are based at Hangar 45 (map), which has easy access from Ferguson Road, just Northwest of the main terminal building. Members get their own keys to access the aircraft and hangar. The hangar is heated during the winter, and has an attached air conditioned / heated lounge with restrooms. Fort Wayne Aerocenter provides excellent line service which includes aircraft fueling and towing.

We have access to on-field maintenance, meaning minimum downtime in the event of scheduled or unexpected repairs. We have two members serving as maintenance officers, and they have proven themselves experienced and reliable. We have a squawk system in place that makes all members aware of recent maintenance, and allows for easy reporting of new issues.
